Commission Your Painting
Thank
you for considering commissioning me to paint an original work of art for you!
This process will entail a creative and fun partnership between the two of us and will result in an heirloom to be enjoyed for generations. I look forward to working with you! Sample Commission Art
"My original painting was created by Kay Crawford, an accomplished artist. I commissioned her to paint this view that I love so much. Now I have a reminder everyday of the mountains that I so dearly cherish. I love how the colors in my painting change with the day light and the evening lighting. I enjoy it so much, I hope to commission another one soon."
"Dear Kay:
Steps for Commissioning Your Painting
1. Determine Your Goals Do you want me to create a painting that is similar to one of mine you have seen (perhaps in a different size or color palette)? Do you want to memorialize a favorite landscape, home or memory? What mood do you want me to capture? How will you use the finished painting (hang it on your wall, make it the cover of your book)? How large do you want the painting to be (keeping in mind that the frame will add up to 3.5” to each side - see "Purchase Original Works" page for examples of the frames I use). Look at my art on the Paintings page (Available Original Works and Selected Sold Works) to see which ones speak to you and why. Also determine if there is anything you don’t like about my art or don’t want to see in the art I create for you. Give some thought on how you would like the commission to progress, what your budget and timeline are, what role you see yourself playing and what you expect from me, your artist. We will discuss these questions before getting started so that our collaborative partnership runs smoothly from the start. 2. Select your Source Material Ideally, I would like to take my own photographs of the scene you would like me to paint, though I understand this is often not practical. I can work from your clear, detailed photographs as long as they are photos you have taken. (Photos taken by professional photographers are copyrighted by that photographer so I can use them as a reference but cannot copy them exactly.) Letting me know which elements of the scene are important to you will help me when creating the composition of your painting. 3. Agreement After determining the scope of the project and its general design, we will sign a simple agreement outlining our agreed upon concept for your painting, price and payment schedule, completion time frame, shipping and framing responsibilities and copyright information. 4. Deposit, Painting Creation and Completion After receiving your 50% non-refundable deposit, I will create your painting in the time frame we agreed upon. While I am creating your original work of art I will give you progress reports. Once completed and final payment received, I will ship your painting to you. Other Considerations
Artistic Interpretation
Since you are considering commissioning me to create your painting, I assume that you appreciate my individual artistic style. If so, it is important to leave room for my artistic interpretation of your vision – after all, if you wanted an exact copy of a scene, then a photograph would be a better option! Pricing Commissioned art prices depend on the complexity of the subject plus the time and the research needed work with the client and provide progress reports. Due to the collaborative, personal and complex nature of painting commissions, they are usually priced somewhat higher than paintings of a similar size created solo by the artist. Once we have determined your goals and reviewed your source photos, I will be able to provide you with a price quote for your painting. I require a 50% non-refundable deposit and signed agreement to begin, with balance, framing, (travel expenses if agreed upon), shipping and tax paid before delivery of your painting. Due to their unique and personal nature, I am not able to accept returns on commissioned paintings, so please be sure to measure your space to guarantee a perfect fit. Copyright Art is typically copyrighted to the person who created it (even if you give them the original subject idea), which gives the artist the right to decide who can use their work and how, whether or not it can be duplicated or reproduced, and where and how it can be displayed. Unless we agree otherwise, you are purchasing the original artwork with the intent to hang it on your wall and the copyright remains with me, the artist. I have the right to make prints from a digital copy of it, use it in my portfolio and on my website, and license the image. I look forward to working with you! Questions?
